PARK UNITED 2 RIVERSTOWN FC 3
Riverstown were missing three of their regular players for this away match in Mitchelstown. Park were very quick to settle in and were awarded a free kick outside Riverstown’s box after seven minutes. Park scored directly from the free in what should have been a relatively simple ball to save but ‘keeper Murphy was off his line and was unable to get his hands to the dipping ball. Ten minutes later Park scored again when Riverstown were unable to clear the ball and their resulting shot was unstoppable. Riverstown started to settle down and made a few advances. Riverstown got their opening goal from a free kick. Diarmuid Ryng swung the ball into the six yard box and in their attempt to clear the ball one of Park’s players hit it into the back of his own net.
Riverstown came out in the second half on fire. They constantly attacked the Park goal and were unlucky not to have scored three or four goals. Ryng, Horgan, O’Callaghan, Michael Conlon, who had a great game, and O’Mahony all had attempts saved or were denied by the woodwork. Diarmuid Ryng scored Riverstown’s equaliser twenty minutes into the second half. Barry O’Mahony’s saved attempt at goal was pounced on by Ryng and slotted it to the back of the net. The winner finally came five minutes later. Riverstown attacked Park’s goalmouth and after the ball hit the woodwork and the defence attempted clearance Paul O’Callaghan was on hand to finish off the move and score Riverstown’s third goal. Riverstown came away happy with the win but were disappointed they did not take advantage of their missed chances.

MAYFIELD UNITED 2 RIVERSTOWN FC 2
Riverstown played this away game in Mayfield’s all-weather pitch even though weather conditions were near perfect. Riverstown were at a disadvantage and it took them some time to get used to the playing surface. Mayfield took advantage of this and got two soft goals within 20 minutes that Riverstown may not have conceded as a rule. Riverstown’s defence settled in after the second goal and were constantly under pressure for the remainder of the first half but handled the pressure very well.
The second half started as the first half finished and it looked as if Riverstown would not score as chances were very few. Alan Barry came on for Riverstown 20 minutes in to the second half. This was Alan’s first game for Riverstown since he was injured almost nine months ago and his team mates were delighted to welcome him back again. Riverstown were still under pressure and just could not benefit from any of their few attacks. However, with 6 minutes to go Michael Conlon came on and Tiernan Hourihan was brought up to midfield and David Smiddy was pushed forward. Almost immediately Tiernan hit a lovely through ball to Diarmuid Ryng who took on the Mayfield defence and hit the ball into the back of the net for a well taken goal. Riverstown’s tails were up and put pressure on Mayfield straight away. Within a minute of the goal Mayfield conceded a corner. Alan Barry took the corner and hit a high ball across the goalmouth. Mayfield’s attempted clearance was seized upon by Michael Conlon who’s shot was saved by the ‘keeper but Tiernan Hourihan was there to slot the scrambled ball into the goal. With only a few minutes to go Riverstown kept their composure and held on for the draw and were delighted to come away with a point.

RINGMAHON RANGERS 1 RIVERSTOWN FC 2
This lower end of the Premier division clash was always going to be a close affair. However, only for some outstanding saves from goalkeeper Cormac Murphy, Riverstown would not have come away with the three points. Both teams were evenly matched for the first half. Ringmahon and Riverstown had a number of chances but failed to capitalise on any advantage. Keeper Murphy was kept busy even though his defence were very strong. Niall Horgan was unlucky not to score as he had an ideal opportunity to slip the ball into the net but instead blasted over the goal from six yards. Diarmuid Ryng and Shane Barry both had shots saved from the Ringmahon keeper.
The second half began exactly as the first half finished. However, after twenty minutes Riverstown started to take control of the game. Niall Horgan made a number of solo runs up the left wing and was unlucky not to score at least one goal. Paul O’Callaghan and David Smiddy played a pivotal role in midfield and it was O’Callaghan’s constant pressure that led to the first goal for Riverstown. Diarmuid Ryng pounced on a cleared attempt from O’Callaghan and placed the ball into the back of the net. Riverstown had their tails up and began to pressurise the home goal. Riverstown’s second goal came from a clearance from the Ringmahon defence. Shane Barry was in the right place easily 20 yards from goal and hid a superb volley over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. With only a few minutes to go to the end of the game Riverstown became too complacent and relaxed and let Ringmahon in to score an excellent goal. However, it was too late as the final whistle blew much to the relief of Riverstown.
