Under 11 Division 4

RIVERSTOWN FC 2 BALLINCOLLIG 2

Riverstown played host to table toppers Ballincollig, who were unbeaten this season, on Sunday November 25th at Knockraha. For all who watched this game, it will rank among the best. Riverstown showed all their potential and dominated this game from the start with one and two touch football that had Ballincollig defending for their lives. They were restricted to operating a counter attacking game and it was clear why they are the current table toppers with intelligent defending and passing. Riverstown finally broke through after 20 mins with a goal by Luke Hackett which they fully deserved. The Riverstown defence stood solid against the few counter attacks mounted by Ballincollig and all the best chances were falling to a well disciplined Riverstown side.

As was to be expected Ballincollig tried to press Riverstown more in the second half but it was still Riverstown who were creating the more clear cut chances. With legs tiring, Ballincollig broke down another Riverstown attack and with a speedy counter attack caught out the Riverstown defence after 45 mins for an equaliser. On 50 mins, with Riverstown again attacking we had a similar situation, a quick break and Ballincollig were 2-1 up. With the introduction of fresh legs, this never say die team upped their game even more and on 53 mins were back on level terms after a super move started in their own half was put away by Gary Connolly to tie the game up.

Riverstown completely dominated Ballincollig from here to the end but could not put the finishing touch to their many attacks. Ballincollig will have been relieved to have escaped from here with a point considering it was top versus bottom. This team clearly showed they are a match for any team and their league position belies their ability. Well done to the entire squad for their effort and skill, in contributing to a great game of football.

PARK UNITED 6 RIVERSTOWN FC 2

If ever a scoreline didn’t reflect the game then this was it. On balance a draw would probably have been a fairer reflection. Having gone 3 goals down in the first 15 mins, Riverstown started to play some outstanding football and completely dominated the remainder of the half. On 20 mins a bullet of a header from Ryan Murray from a David Dunlea corner was cleared from behind the goaline and after some hesitation the referee pointed to the center circle. On 25 mins a breathtaking defence splitting through ball was played by the outstanding Ryan Murray and the ever alert and active Ryan O'Gorman picked it up at the half way line. With a turn of speed and awareness he dribbled half the length of the pitch with Park defenders in full chase. With the keeper advancing out he opened out his body and with a coolness defying his age he expertly side footed to the bottom right hand corner. With the score now 3-2 and Riverstown well on top, Park managed to hold out until half time which couldn’t come soon enough for them.

As the second half was about to start, an extremely strong wind blew up in Park Utd’s favour and this was to have a telling effect on the game. For the entire second half the wind never let up and consequently Riverstown were only on the odd occasion able to break over the half way line. With determination and commitment the entire team battled to keep Park, who had the assistance of the wind, at bay. With less than 10 mins remaining and some very tired legs on the Riverstown boys, Park finally broke through and scored 3 in quick succession to make it 6-2. This team is continually progressing and with a bit of luck on their side will surely gain their first points in this a tough division for them.

RIVERSTOWN FC 2 LAKEWOOD ATHLETIC B 4

A thrilling game of football by both sides saw Riverstown come out on the wrong end of a 4-2 scoreline.A game in which a draw would have been a fair result saw Riverstown 2-1 at the break after a Luke Hackett scored mid-way through the half. The second half saw Riverstown up their game and a deserved equaliser was scored mid-way through the half by Conor Walsh. As the game looked like finishing even Riverstown were caught napping in the last 3 minutes and conceded 2 soft goals which sealed a faith they didn’t deserve. As this is the development side I am sure the lads will learn from this. Each and every player deserves credit for their performance.

SPRINGFIELD RAMBLERS 7 RIVERSTOWN FC 2

Springfields developement squad recorded a very comfortable victory in a game which Riverstown never competed.A disappointing performance following on from their game against Passage. Best for Riverstown were Luke Hackett, Ryan O Gorman and Conor Walsh.

RIVERSTOWN FC 1 PASSAGE UNITED 2

Riverstown made their league debut in this home game against Passage. A nervy first 10 mins saw Riverstown on the back foot and defending resolutely against a physically bigger and older Passage team, who have a number of their side also playing with their Under 12 team. From here the home side showed their character by contesting every ball and mounting attacks of their own and causing some panic in the Passage defence. With 5 mins to half time Passage attacked on the right and a crossfield ball was missed by everyone except an unmarked Passage player who rifled an unstoppable shot to the net from the edge of the area. The second half continued as the first with Passage dominating and Riverstown defending superbly. On 45 mins Passage scored a second from the edge of the box. Riverstown pushed on from here and dominated for large parts of the remainder of the game. On 50 mins a superb pass from Captain Ryan Murray to Luke Hackett saw him dribble past four strong challenges before slotting the ball past the advancing keeper. The final 10 mins saw Riverstown unlucky not to grab an equaliser and the game ended 2-1 to Passage. As this Riverstown team is made up of U10's, they can all be proud of their performance and I'm sure they will do themselves proud for the rest of the season.
